We love the white layer varieties, there are many beautiful and rare breeds to choose from. Leghorns have been our best white egg laying hens. (By the way, a rooster is not needed for a hen to lay eggs!)

All breeds listed below do well in hot weather, make sure they still have some shade and fresh water at all times! We hope this helps you select the right breed that you’ll enjoy in your own back yard!

Chicken Breeds

	Anaconas / Mottled Leghorn Personality– Active, can be tamed. Class– Mediterranean Weight– About 5 pounds. Hardiness– Very cold hardy. Egg Size / Production– Large white egg about 4 times a week.
	White Leghorn (popular breed) Personality– Active, chatty, flighty Class– Mediterranean Weight– About 5 pounds Hardiness– Tolerant to heat, fairly good in cold. Egg Size / Production– Large white egg 4-5 + times a week.
	Blue Hamburg / Rare Personality– Active Class– Continental Weight– About 4 pounds. Hardiness– Cold hardy. Egg Size / Production– Lays small white egg about 4 times a week.
	Sicilian Buttercup / Rare (has double comb like a cup.) Personality- Active, Flighty Class- Italy Weight- About 5 pounds Hardiness- does not do well in cold. Egg Size / Production- Medium white egg about 3 times a week.
	Silver Spangled Hamburg / Rare Personality– Active, Chatty Class– Continental Weight– 4-5 pounds. Hardiness– Cold hardy. Egg Size / Production– Small white egg about 4-5 times a week.
	Exchequer Leghorn / Rare Personality– Active, flighty Class– Italy / Mediterranean Weight– about 5 pounds Hardiness– Heat tolerant. Egg Size / Production– Medium to large white egg about 5+ times a week.
	Brown Leghorn (popular breed) Personality– Active, good forager, flighty, can be tamed. Class– Mediterranean Weight– 4-5 pounds. Hardiness– Heat tolerant, fairly good in cold weather. Egg Size / Production– Medium to large white egg about 3 times a week.
	Salmon Faverolles / Rare Personality– Alert, docile Class– France Weight– about 7 pounds. Hardiness– Cold hardy. Egg Size / Production– Medium creamy color egg about 4 times a week.
	Ameraucana / Easter Egger (popular breed) Personality– Docile Class– Recently developed, mixed breed. (some say South America.) Weight– About 5 pounds. Hardiness– Cold and heat tolerant. Egg Size / Production– Medium egg from turquoise to light and olive green tones, about  4  times a week. (Araucana’s are a little different breed, they are rumpless, meaning no tail and have feather tufts near their ears.)
	Golden Lakenvelder / Rare Personality– Active but quiet Class– Germany Weight– About 4 pounds. Hardiness– Cold hardy. Egg Size / Production– Small white egg about 3 times a week.
